Vitamin D for the body… and watermelons!

Vitamin D for the body… and watermelons!

Spain is renowned for an endless list of things on an international level, one of which is being the world’s leading exporter of watermelons, and for us, a source of pride.

Since 2018, more than 870,000 tonnes of watermelon have been exported, so Watermelon Fashion®, it’s all over the world!. That is why, with more responsibility and commitment than ever, we must know how to take care of our plants now that the hot season is beginning. Here are some tips on how to do it.

From this spring time onwards, when temperatures start to rise, the queen of summer fruits, our Fashion® watermelons, are at their best from early in the morning, at 10ºC and with humidity around 90%. It quickly reaches 30 and 40 degrees, and although this helps the growth and development of the plant, without optimal watering care, the watermelon bush could be affected, causing losses of between 15 and 50% in certain crops.

Another essential contribution to harvest the best watermelons is that they must be well pollinated. The best way to achieve this is by prioritising the presence of insects, such as bees and wasps. An ecosystem with a lot of vegetation and access to water will favour our plants.

We know how lucky we are to have a land so rich in minerals and for this reason, our watermelon has a great advantage: thanks to the daily work with the plants, we avoid sunburn and other damage that the sun can cause during the summer season, as well as the possible dehydration due to the evaporation of the water.

Through the crop diffusers, the light is diffused to avoid heat stress. With this we achieve that the appearance of our fruit improves, as it gets a brighter and brighter colour, and a more homogeneous size… and appetizing to the naked eye, because yes, size matters here.

We know that everything in excess is bad, that’s why at Sandía Fashion® we control everything in the right measure. This way, you’ll never get tired of the summer season: sun, sea and lots of watermelon!
