Vitamin D for the body… and watermelons!

Spain is internationally recognized for an endless list of things, one of which is being the world’s leading exporter of watermelons, and for us, that’s a source of pride.

Since 2018, more than 870,000 tons of watermelon have been exported, so Sandía Fashion® is all over the world! Therefore, with more responsibility and commitment than ever, we must know how to care for our plants now that the warm season is starting. Here are some tips to achieve this.

From this spring season onwards, when temperatures begin to rise, the queen of summer fruits, our watermelons, are at their peak from early morning, with temperatures of 10°C and humidity approaching 90%. Temperatures quickly reach 30 and 40 degrees Celsius, and although this helps the plant’s growth and development, without optimal irrigation, the watermelon plant could be affected, causing losses of between 15 and 50% in certain crops.

Another essential factor for harvesting the best watermelons is that they are well pollinated. The best way to achieve this is by prioritizing the presence of insects, such as bees and wasps. An ecosystem with abundant vegetation and access to water will benefit our plants.

We know how fortunate we are to have such mineral-rich soil, and that’s why our watermelon has a significant advantage: thanks to our daily work with the plants, we avoid sunburn and other damage that the sun can cause during the summer, as well as possible dehydration due to water evaporation.

Using diffusers on the crops, the light is diffused to prevent heat stress. This improves the appearance of our fruit, giving it a brighter, more vibrant color and a more uniform size… and appetizing to the naked eye, because yes, size matters here.

We know that too much of anything is bad, so we regulate everything to the right amount. That way, you’ll never get tired of summer: sun, sea, and lots of watermelon!
